A bit more about us, from founder & Musical Director, Jo:
Our main focus is on experiencing all the benefits of singing in a group, and leaving worries behind for an hour or so each week. Because we rehearse in social places, we make the most of that by staying afterwards to chat, which has become really integral & something a little unique.
There is freedom in my approach, with arrangements being tailored to suit the singers in front of me, sometimes changing organically (not massively, but little tweaks here & there) as we go. I choose music that, for me at least, evokes some kind of emotion and that I think will FEEL emotive to sing. I try to give every part the chance to sing the main tune, sometimes as a whole choir (which sounds & feels really good), and then we work on harmonies, where the magic happens!
I also encourage singers to play around with the song, to make it suit their own vocal range. Nothing is set in stone, and the main intention is for everyone to really let go and enjoy singing out, without fear or judgement.
Whilst performing is usually a very positive experience for most choir members (although nerve-wracking at first), it is not my goal to be a huge public presence or always be working towards polishing songs for performance - so it's nice just to be part of small local events, and give back to the community in that way every so often.
We sing a real mix of styles, and along with learning tracks and video tutorials, I try to produce the lyrics with some kind of visual cues to help, as well as providing everyone with a folder. I encourage people to put the lyrics down, but it's not obligatory (even when we do perform).
We don't have T-shirts (yet) and haven't raised lots of money for charity (although we have sung at charity events), nor do I offer particularly glamorous glitzy performing/social opportunities, and it is not the intention to be a really big choir.
From the start I wanted to create a community that felt pretty chilled, with like-minded people just singing together having a jolly nice time!
If you want to switch off for a couple of hours each week by singing some good tunes & connecting with lovely humans, with some relaxed socials & small (but always nourishing), performances thrown in - and sometimes the chance to sing at iconic local venues such as Minack & Eden - then maybe this might just be the community for you!
Thanks for reading this, and hope to see you soon. Love Jo 🩵💚
